SAMPLE AND METHODS This study was begun as a part of the Expertise in Nursing Practice study funded by the Helene Fuld Foundation from 1990 to 1996. This work includes an extension to the original data set of small group interviews with 130 critical care units in eight different hospitals and observations and individual interviews with a sub-sample of 48 of these nurses.
