Try them all and decide which brand works best for your applications. Do you live in a warm climate or cool, do you have hot hands or cold? These may be factors in your choice of polymer clay. Let’s look at some brands and see how they compare to Kato Polyclay. The newest brand of polymer clay, Kato Polyclay, is the first polymer clay designed by an artist for artists and is the result of a collaboration between Van Aken International and me. We manufacture in Rancho Cucamonga, California. After discussing the characteristics we wished to have in our clay, Tony Aquino and Van Aken vice president Robert Augur formulated Kato Polyclay.
As of this writing, Polyform has not reformulated its Sculpey/Premo brands. The new formulations may differ from their phthlate versions in some ways, but they remain polymer clays, working and performing as they always have. You may find one brand softer than it used to be, or the curing temperature might not be the same; but essentially, they are still oven-cured modeling materials—polymer clays. Unlike earth clays, polymer clays are produced in a great range of colors that may be mixed to create a custom color palette.
These blades are intended for use by adults only and should never be given to children. When using these blades, the most important rule is to look at the blade before picking it up. Always avoid placing your fingers on any edge of the blade, sharp or dull; rather, grasp the sides of the blade and cut down. In all my years working with these blades, I have never cut myself with them. Be careful, and you will stay safe, too. The Kato Marxit is a tool I designed and, with my husband, Vernon, brought to market.
